New German publication "Pearl of Africa" supports project of YoG/GRASP-partner |

The new, beautiful coffee-table book "Perle Afrikas" (click for info on book) features about 300 very high quality pictures (selected from the pictures of a team of 8 photographers) of the Ruwenzori "Mountains of the Moon" region in Uganda, as well as impressions from a Safari and several visits to Mountain Gorilla groups. It is rounded off by photographs of local people and their colourful villages. The foreword was written by YoG Ambassador Ian Redmond. 10% of the sales volume will support a conservation project in Uganda (see below for more information).
By purchasing this book, you can support the last remaining populations of Mountain Gorillas in the wild, their habitat and local communities in Uganda. Together with Berggorilla & Regenwald Direkthilfe e.V, a GRASP member, Mondberge.com has initiated cooperation on a long-term relief project in Bwindi National Park in Uganda. Click here to sneak a peak at the book's insides. The “Mondberge” project started in mid 2008 and aims to make a contribution to species protection through the production and marketing of various media products. The goal is to document journalistically, to inform the general public, to entertain, to educate and inspire and also to create awareness for protecting the last remaining Mountain gorillas. A live multimedia show (premiere on 15 January 2010) and a pocket reader (Spring 2010) will be offered in 2010. In addition, there are postcards, posters, bookmarks and a DVD with film clips. The supported gorilla conservation project: The mountain gorilla group “Bitukura” lives close to Ruhija in Uganda, directly adjacent to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, and has recently been habituated. No significant tourism infrastructure is in place so far. The gorillas are therefore only rarely visited by tourists, and the advantages of keeping habitat intact for gorilla tourism are still being widely ignored. |

Uganda: Gorilla Tracking Goes Online with friendagorilla.org |
|
Tuesday, 08 September 2009 09:24 |
|

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) will launch an online gorilla-tracking website to promote tourism. The launch is scheduled for September 26th and will be supported by an impressive list of international celebrities. Through the friendagorilla.org website, a global audience will have a chance to befriend gorillas from any of Uganda's seven habituated groups. Gorilla lovers will then be able to track the gorillas online for a fee via GPS and in real time. Online trackers will also be able to add gorillas as friends on Internet social sites such as Facebook, Myspace and Twitter.
"We will have cameras placed strategically in the forest and when you log on, you can see a gorilla moving through the forest from your screen," said Thomas Slater Jr, art director for the project. If it succeeds, the project will make ~$700,000 annually. The money will be used to hire more gorilla trackers and buy better equipment for the trackers, as well as to support conservation efforts through community projects, said Eunice Mahoro, tourism director at UWA. A series of events will accompany the launch: a) Official launch of the Nshongi family – This will take place in Kisoro and will involve tracking of the largest gorilla family ever habituated and a series of other community activities (22nd to 24th of September). b) National Launch of the Friend a Gorilla campaign at Kololo Airstrip on Saturday, 26th September c) Fundraising Gorilla Gala in the evening of the 26th with the highlight being the count-down to the unveiling of the Friendagorilla.org micro site. |

Go Gorilla! weekend at LA Zoo big success despite California wildfires |
|
Friday, 04 September 2009 10:06 |
|
YoG enthusiast Laurel Colton organized an outstanding outreach and fundraising event at LA Zoo, California, on the 29th and 30th of August. This event was just one in a whole series of events Laurel has put together over the last months, and there is still more to come. It is enthusiasts like Laurel who make this campaign so lively, together with the support of CMS, GRASP and WAZA partners.
Together with a group of volunteers (thanks, guys!), Laurel assembled four infotables with a variety of information materials and fun activities for both kids and adults. Two of the tables were gorilla biofact-related and two were more gorilla conservation-related. Docents from LA Zoo gave talks to visitors about gorillas, the YoG, and the LA Zoo's gorilla family group and bachelor group members throughout each day. The zoos enrichment team arranged for special icy treats (frozen tubcicles containing vegetables and fruits) to be given to gorillas to stimulate more activity in the heat of the day (and boy, was it hot!).
On Saturday, August 29th, Dr. Craig Stanford gave a lecture on gorilla biology and conservation, which was a great success, drawing in a crowd and helping raise 1300$ for gorilla conservation projects. |

Ambassador for the UN Year of the Gorilla to take part in the Great Gorilla Run – the YoG Jog |
|
Monday, 31 August 2009 12:27 |
The Ambassador for the 2009 Year of the Gorilla, Ian Redmond, is to put on a gorilla costume and run the unique Great Gorilla Run, a 7km fun run around the streets of London – on knuckles as far as he is able!
The event, on Saturday 26 September, is in aid of The Gorilla Organization (www.gorillas.org, formerly the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Europe). It is 33 years since Ian first worked with the late Dian Fossey and mountain gorillas in Rwanda. Ever since then, he has spent much of his time researching and raising awareness of gorillas and conservation and is the Chief Consultant for GRASP - the UNEP/UNESCO Great Ape Survival Partnership.
The Great Gorilla Run is in its seventh year and has raised more than 60 thousand pounds for grassroots community projects in areas of precious gorilla habitat in Africa, such as: - Training 13 000 Rwandan farmers in sustainable agricultural techniques. - Building water cisterns in Rwanda and DR Congo. - Teaching local communities how to produce and distribute fuel-efficient stoves in DR Congo, reducing consumption by up to 70% (firewood and charcoal are often illegally taken from gorilla habitat)

His drawing of Titus is now on sale at the BornFree online shop. £10 (~30% of profits) per print sold via the YoG website go to a YoG project.
...and his model Titus, the silverback Mountain Gorilla, recently featured in a phenomenal TV documentary charting the remarkable history of the oldest known patriarch of his kind. The photograph that inspired this drawing was taken by Chris' colleague and renowned primatologist, Ian Redmond OBE, who studied the gorillas under Dian Fossey.
